Some take-home lessons from a life in science by Bruce Alberts

✨This name needs no special introduction - everyone knows who Bruce Alberts is, the first author of the world-famous text Molecular Biology of the Cell!

🔬We will have an immense privilege to meet Bruce Alberts in person and to learn from his immense experience from a life in science.

🧬Bruce Alberts completed his PhD in biophysics at Harvard University, and, interestingly enough, he failed his first oral PhD examination, and has ever since stated how his initial displeasing experience has taught him more than every subsequent success he has ever achieved.

🏆Ever since, he has won numerous awards for his contribution to science and science education. He served as the President of National Academy of Sciences in two terms. Named after him, the Bruce Alberts Award for Excellence in Science Education is awarded for outstanding contributions in science education.

💡This will be among the highlights of our year and we warmly recommend all of you to sign up for this lecture. There will be a longer Q&A session afterwards, and everyone is more than welcome to join in!

See you online on April 7 at 17h CET

NOBEL PRIZE WEEK

Dear colleagues,

🧬 We are delighted to invite you to the first lecture within our very special Nobel Week event! We are honoured to be bringing you live Dr William G. Kaelin, corecipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine!

🥼 Dr Kaelin leads the Kaelin laboratory at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Centre. Their work focuses on tumour-suppressor proteins, including the retinoblastoma protein, the von Hippel-Lindau protein (VHL protein), and p73 (a homologue of p53). His Nobel-winning work dealt with the role of VHL, often mutated in kidney cancers, and hypoxia-induced factors (HIFs) 1α and 2α, in the context of an oxygen-sensing mechanism. Targeting these molecules with designer drugs is the focus of developing new therapeutic strategies.

💡 As put in his own words, Dr Kaelin will be explaining “his unlikely and non-linear journey to Stockholm” and “why science is like fishing”, and you will get a unique chance to find out more about what science looks like in the mind of a Nobel laureate. Be sure not to miss this inspiring opportunity during our Nobel Week events!

📅 When? January 31, at 7.30 pm (CET)

🚩 Where? Online, via Zoom platform

🔗 If you don’t want to miss this amazing opportunity, hurry up and fill in the short form! Number of participants at this event in the Nobel Week is not limited, and everyone is warmly encouraged to join in!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

NOBEL PRIZE WEEK

Dear colleagues,

🧬 We have an exciting announcement to make! It is our great pleasure and honor to inform you that our next guest is Andrew Fire! Yes, you have heard it right!

🥼 Andrew Fire is the Professor of Pathology and Genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine and corecipient of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Craig C. Mello, for the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi) – gene silencing by double-stranded RNA. Professor Fire’s laboratory focuses on  a variety of natural mechanisms that are utilized by cells adapting to genetic change. These include mechanisms activated during normal development and systems for detecting and responding to foreign or unwanted genetic activity.

💡This time, the format of the lecture is going to be a little bit different than usual as this will be an interactive discussion between you and Professor Fire. You will have a unique  opportunity to informally chat with Professor Fire about RNA interference, his research interests and his path to becoming a Nobel Prize winner.

❗IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this will be a live discussion the number of participants is limited to 48. Save your spot! Also, active participation and a working camera are mandatory for all participants.

📅 When? February 1, at 8 pm (CET)

🚩 Where? Online,  via Zoom platform

🔗 If you don’t want to miss this amazing opportunity, hurry up and fill in the short form

Hope to see you soon!

Dan DNK - 25. april 2021.
