University of Belgrade, Faculty of Biology

Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Jelena Lozo is Associate Professor at Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Belgrade – Faculty of Biology, where she graduated with a BSc (1999), MSc (2003) and defended her PhD thesis (2008). During PhD and as a post-doc she was at Equipe functions et interactions des protéines laitiérs, Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), Nantes, France several times from 2005 until 2009 for realization of different projects and collaborations. In 2011 she was one months at Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia for realization of ERA 195 - SEE-ERA.NET project.

Areas of scientific interest include biochemical and genetic characterization, determination of mechanism of action for proteinaceous antimicrobials, bacteriocins, produced by lactic acid bacteria natural isolates from artisanal dairy food as well as their applications as probiotics or antimicrobial drugs. Potential of bacteria from the genus Pseudomonas and Bacillus as biological control agents is also one of her research interests. Current research interest has been focused on microorganism – plant interaction in the conditions of abiotic stress, as well as plant growth promoting bacteria which could alleviate influence of such conditions.

She was involved in several national scientific projects funded by Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and international scientific projects of bilateral collaboration, or funded by ICGEB, European Union. She is a reviewer in international scientific journals from different field of microbiology, associate editor in BMC Microbiology and member of several scientific societies.
