Milan Kojić

University of Belgrade, Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering

Milan Kojic graduated at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Natural Sciences in Biology with BSc (1987). He obtained Msc (1992) and PhD (1995) in Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. He is appointed as a Head of Laboratory for Molecular Microbiology, Belgrade, Serbia. Dr Kojic's research focuses on the molecular genetics of bacteria important for medicine, the pharmaceutical and the food industry. The activities carried out by Dr. Kojić's team include addressing the most relevant issues that affect society, such as: new mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in pathogens, the emergence and the global spread of clinically relevant antibiotic resistance and isolation and characterization of new therapeutic antimicrobial agents (bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides, lipopeptide antibiotics, lytic bacteriophages and lytic enzymes) active against MDR pathogens. In addition, his research is aimed at finding fundamental answers to the questions of the emergence of new mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, regulation of gene expression in bacteria under stress and stationary phase (in pseudomonads and lactic acid bacteria), development of new vectors for cloning and expression of new genes/proteins in homologous and heterologous host, interactions between antimicrobial molecules (bacteriocins) and membrane receptors. He established collaboration in all fields of work with a large number of scientific and university institutions worldwide.
