Pavel Bashtrykov graduated from Moscow State University in medicine and afterwards worked as a research assistant in clinical trials on new anticancer treatments. Later, he focused on basic research in the field of Epigenetics and obtained a PhD at Stuttgart University on topic "Regulation of DNA methyltransferase 1". Now, he is a Group leader at the Institute of Biochemistry and Technical Biochemistry at Stuttgart University, where he conducts research aimed at the understanding of epigenetic regulation of gene expression by DNA methylation in health and disease.

Based on this research, he designs artificial proteins based on CRISPR/Cas9 system and chromatin modifying enzymes for targeted epigenome editing. Using these synthetic instruments, he works on the development of epigenetic therapy for correction of aberrant imprinting, treatment of autosomal dominant and neurodevelopmental disorders.
